The 1849 Cannon

Old cannon, Fortezza Nuova, Livorno
This old cannon is placed on an embankment of the Fortezza Nuova and it is pointed towards Porta San Marco (Saint Mark's Gate), in memory of the defense of the city against the Austrian troops in 1849.

More Cannons

Old cannons used as bollards, Molo Novo, Livorno
The first cannons recycled as bollards we have seen were those around the North Lighthouse. There are many more around the South Lighthouse at the other end of the “Diga Curvilinea” (Curvilinear Breakwater).

Two more cannons are quite at hand at the entrance of the Porto Mediceo: one is just past the pilots' boats, the other lies by the green light of the port.

Two Cannons

Small dry dock, port of Livorno
We have already seen our small dry dock at work and how it is closed by a caisson. What we haven't noticed before is that two old cannons were recycled on its sides as bollards.

We saw other cannons near the North Lighthouse and we will see a few more around the Porto Mediceo.

The North Lighthouse

We do not post as many old postcards as we used to, but we do not really like to watermark pictures. Sadly, the usual slobs keep posting these images without acknowledging the source.

The same tower, seen from a different angle. A more recent structure now lies further north: the “Diga della Meloria” (Meloria Breakwater). In both images you can see old cannons recycled as bollards.

Around the Fortress

Fortezza Nuova, Livorno
Many younger kids have never been before inside the recently reopened Fortezza Nuova.

I have never been able to discover if this teepee of sorts had some kind of cover.
