The Google Maps Camera Car was again in Livorno last Friday.

Google Maps Camera Car

Last Tuesday an unusual car was parked amid the vehicles of the Polizia Municipale (Municipal Police).

It was a Google Maps Opel Astra with its 15-lens “camera”. Street View arrived in Livorno more than five years ago, as soon as they knew of our blog.

The rig keeps the device at a height of 8.2 feet (2.5 m) and also features GPS units for tracking location, and laser range scanners that capture 3D models of the car’s surroundings.

Three Years of PowerShots

Exactly three years ago we posted our first photo of Livorno on this blog. On our third anniversary it is time to honor our modest tools: I took most of these pictures with the camera above, a Canon PowerShot SX20 IS, which I have been using since December 2009.
On the left a slightly younger me is sitting near a bollard in the “Porto Mediceo”, holding my older camera, a PowerShot SX3. On the right Trillian is posing at La Défense with another PowerShot, her SX5.
