Twenty Five Years

Plaque in memory of the victims of the Moby Prince disaster, Porto Mediceo, Livorno
In the late evening of Wednesday April 10, 1991, the ferry “Moby Prince” collided with the oil tanker “Agip Abruzzo” just outside the port of Livorno. An extensive fire ravaged the ship and there was only one survivor, the other 140 on board were killed by the fire or toxic fumes. A plaque at the entrance of the Porto Mediceo remembers the names of the victims.

Moby Vincent

The “Moby Vincent” is one of the oldest ferries in service between Livorno and Bastia: she was built at the Rickmers shipyard in Bremerhaven, Germany, and launched in 1974 as “Stena Normandica”.

The ferry, like many other born up there, got tired of the cold Northern seas and in 1990 migrated to the Mediterranean. Renamed “Moby Vincent”, she began to ply the route between Corsica and Italy.

Moby Aki ferry, IMO 9299393, LivornoThe “Moby Aki” is another sister ship of “Moby Wonder” and “Moby Freedom”, but with a different birthplace: the ferry was built in 2005 at the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona.Moby Aki ferry, IMO 9299393, LivornoTweety, Sylvester, Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, Taz and Wile E. Coyote are lined up as usual on the sides of the Moby Lines ferries. There is one more sister ship, but in quite different waters: the “MS Superstar” sails the Baltic for the Estonian Tallink.

Moby Freedom

In the rush to the finishing line we can see: Wile E. Coyote, Bugs Bunny, Taz, Tweety, Sylvester and Daffy Duck.

Moby Wonder

Moby Wonder ferry, IMO 9214367, LivornoThe “Moby Wonder” usually links Livorno with Olbia, in Sardinia. It is a 175m cruiseferry, which is a kind of ship combining some features of a cruise ship with a ferry. The boat was built in 2001 in South Korea by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, the second largest shipbuilder in the world.Moby Wonder ferry, IMO 9214367, Livorno Moby Lines is known for its liveries featuring Looney Tunes characters: Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Taz, Wile E. Coyote, Tweety and Sylvester are neatly framed on the sides of this ferry.

Twenty Years

Moby Prince memorial plaque, LivornoToday is the 20th anniversary of the tragedy of the ferry “Moby Prince”. A memorial plaque with the names of the 140 victims was erected inside the “Porto Mediceo”.
