The 61-meter “Urania” is a research vessel of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (National Research Council).
A few days ago the ship has been cut in half and additional pieces were inserted to bring her length to 67 meters.
A close up view of the cut with part of the new hull in place.

It looks like it's seen a lot of time in service already.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos, VP! Does make me wonder what they needed the extra length for.
ReplyDeleteIt looks huge out of water.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard about elongating a ship before VP.. I wonder why?
ReplyDeleteI did not imagine that ships could be cut in two parts...
ReplyDeleteThat just sounds and looks incredible!
ReplyDeleteHmmm. I'm not sure I would want to sail on a ship that had been elongated like that. I'd be afraid, very afraid!
ReplyDeleteThis is so interesting VP.
ReplyDeleteThat is astounding! I'd never think you could cut a ship in half and make it longer! As some other commenters have suggested, would that not weaken the structure so a very strong storm could tear the ship apart at the middle?
ReplyDeleteMust be a pretty valuable vessel to go to all that trouble.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. Does more boat = more research power?
ReplyDeleteWould be fun to see them putting it back together again.
ReplyDeleteGreat series. So many details!
