It was built in 1913 as “Salone Margherita”, but we always knew it as “Cinema Jolly”, the name probably changed after the war, when it became a quite popular cheap movie theater.
Its last incarnation was as an adult movie theater, when such a thing still existed.
The building has been closed and almost abandoned for a while, but it is now undergoing some refurbishing to transform it in a commercial space: a definite improvement, at least in this case.
Let us hope that at least some of the interesting decorations will be preserved.

Fascinating old building! I agree that it should be renovated but with some sense of its original structure and decorations. In my mind's eye, I can see, in that 2nd shot, the place filled with people staring eagerly at the screen.

ReplyDeleteWe have one of these too. Yup, it went the 'adult theater' route too. The last 10 years or so it has evolved into a quite popular rock venue, complete with some ornate work and a balcony.

ReplyDeleteoh wow, it is beautiful! isn't it funny, we had one where i grew up and it was also changed to an adult theater, the pussycat lol...now it's been changed into one of those all you can eat troughs!
