Panettone

Panettone, Livorno
“Panettone” (plural “panettoni”) is a sweet leavened egg bread made with butter, raisins and candied orange. Originally from Milan, “panettone” is not easy to make: it usually comes in 1 kg pieces and the average price for a mass-produced industrial version is around 4 Euro, while the hand-made version goes for 4-5 times that. Some other variations are available such as plain or with chocolate, but they are not the real thing. It is served in slices, usually with “spumante” (sparkling wine) or sweet wines.

  3. I'll take the Spumante! I am not a big fan of raisins but if it were chocolate chips, bring it on.

  5. Sounds divine. I've had panettone here in a local Italian restaurant and grocery store, but I bet it's not quite the same as what you have described.

  6. Oh panettone! Just yesterday my nun friends and I were reminiscing about the tall panettone that Filippo the hermit shared with us some years ago.
I'm glad to learn all the details you give us here.

  7. Dina - A hermit with a panettone?
ciel - I tried some of the allegedly 'handmade' panettoni: they are not four-five times better than the best industrial ones, if not exactly the same!
