Five-Thousand-Euro Bicycles

Bike sharing station, piazza Cavour, Livorno
The Municipality has just spent 127.000 Euro for four bike sharing stations and a total of 24 bicycles: it is not too difficult to calculate their cost at 5.290 Euro each. Let us hope that these bikes will not be stolen or damaged beyond repair in a short time...

  1. Wow. My bike costed me 800 Euro. And for that money you could buy a electric bike today.

  4. This idea is great. I hope it is a big success and that the bad guys in your town will decide that bike theft is neither cool nor rewarding.

  6. Am I missing something? While a bike share is a wonderful idea, how can the cost be so high for a bike that will be used by anyone and is left to the elements and the vandals? I think I paid 1/19th of that amount for my hybrid and it's a GREAT BIKE! (Still reading and redoing the math in case I missed something.) I suppose the station is part of the cost....

  7. So now you have your VĂ©libs too. I don't know what the vandalism rate is in Paris but they are a huge success...

  13. Bike-sharing has worked really well here in Toronto and it seems that after the cost of setting up the system it gets a lot cheaper to add more bikes.

  14. In times of austerity, this seems a little extravagant.
