Under the Table

Effetto Venezia, LivornoA few days ago checks on eight restaurants at “Effetto Venezia” have found 22 workers “paid under the table”, some of then minors. Fines amounted to 55 thousand Euro and five businesses were immediately shut down. Four of them were able to reopen after paying up front a first fine of 1500 Euro.

  2. The picture looks top-heavy, wonderfully strange.
Too bad about the statistics though.

  3. And if they look harder they will probably find a few more. Same situation in Stockholm.

  4. I know the meaning of “paid under the table”... but it sounded so funny when applied to restaurant workers.

  5. That's too bad. They need to find legal ways to let people work.

  6. Here the great majority of people working in cafés or restaurants is Brazilian. I question myself many times about all being legal immigrants and, if not, how they get paid.

  7. Shameful, even more so since hospitality workers are paid very little anyway.

I remember when they checked the bills up in the more luxurious mountain resorts, like Cortina d'Ampezzo. I wonder what came of that, if anybody actually paid a fine and if they are now paying their fair share of taxes.

I have come across quite a few restaurants where they thought they can get away by giving me a handwritten receipt, not the required bollettino. And it did not matter that we all spoke Italian.

  8. It happens here too, with family members... That's a very nice photo though, I like the evening light.

  9. E' giusto, purtroppo il lavoro a nero è più diffuso di quel che si pensi! Ciao, Arianna

  11. I love this photo. It must be a great place for a meal.

Lots of business owners think they need to cut corners in order to succeed in business. They must figure that no one will find out.
