Oil on canvas, 60 x 92cm
Stuttgart, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart
Modigliani's first and only solo exhibition was in 1917 at the Berthe Weill gallery in Paris. Most of the paintings exhibited there were nudes. The police of a city accustomed to considerably more erotic images declared the nudes a public nuisance and closed the exhibition.

ReplyDeleteSuch paintings were declared "a public nuisance"?? Oi. Times have changed.

Are you going to the exhibition at the Pinacothèque ? I think it's still on...
ReplyDeleteDina - I guess the nuisance were the guys 'looking' at the paintings in the windows of the gallery.
ReplyDeleteciel - May be, if the police doesn't shut it down...
