Palio Marinaro 2011

Gozzo (ten rowers) of Venezia, Trofeo D'Alesio 2011, LivornoLast Sunday the “gozzo” (ten-oar boat) of the “Venezia” quarter won the “Palio Marinaro”, the most important race of our rowing season. (Picture taken on April 16 during the Trofeo D'Alesio)

    Congratulations, VP. Does Palio mean something like "race"? I know they have horse races in Sienna that are called Palio.

    @ Jack - The “palio”, a sort of banner, is the trophy delivered to the winner.
    It is usually a rectangular piece of cloth, hand-painted by an artist for the occasion.
