The market was built on a project by the architects Beata di Gaddo and Pietro Barucci, winners of a design contest organized in the late 1950s by our Municipality.
Looking like a pagoda and, as they say, inspired by the shape of a sail, it was built in the early 1960s using the
béton brut technique.
The building looks more like a tent to me, never had many fans in town and teaches us the wonders a good coat of paint can do.

ReplyDeleteThis fish market reminds me of a ship...and many churches in this country and others use this fundamental design...the symbolism being the church is a ship carrying believers safely through the storms of life. That's where the word, "nave," came from - the maritime connection.

The video was interesting...never saw so many fish in one place...and some big ones, too!

ReplyDeleteI have to disagree about the architecture: much worse buildings have been built in the 50s, I actually like the sloping roof. And I really like that last shot, it's very graphic.
I am a fish eater, but still, seeing so many beautiful but dead fish in boxes is kind of sad.

ReplyDeletePS. I take it that is a wholesale market as well as retail. Are they sell by auction, I see on the video? Interesting "arena" looking down on the seafood on the conveyor belt.
