    How old is Livorno, VP? The tower on the fortress looks very old. I'm imagining knights in armor charging on horses.

    @ ciel - 'round midnight it's a busy time...

    @ Stine - Sorry, I forgot the link (now it is working): the oldest part of the fortress was built around 12th Century, the more recent in the early 16th Century.

    @ Julie - You are right, but unfair to poor Livorno. Florence is one of the most beautiful cities on Earth: it is far easier to get a lucky shot there than in our neglected port city.

    Vogon, I know what you mean about getting places in the south of Italy. When I planned our drive from Rome through Sicily, I saw online all these great places to visit, mostly to the east of the big highway in hilly country. When I investigated, I found that it was likely to take days to get to some town with interesting things in it, and we just didn't have that much time. We did take one day driving from Paestum to Polla (not that Polla is a destination, it just happens to be on the highway). It was truly memorable, but it would take forever to travel far on roads like that. However, I *will* scold you for not seeing the south of your most magnificent country! :-p I'd go back in a second.
