Scali delle Barchette

Scali delle Barchette, LivornoThis picture was taken from the “ponte della Venezia” (Venice bridge) toward “Scali delle Barchette” (landing of the small boats), trying to emulate the angle of the old postcard.
In background we see the reddish “Capitana” bastion of the “Fortezza Vecchia” and the round “Mastio di Matilde”. The “Santa Trinita” bridge, in front of the fortress, is a new incarnation of the old one with the arches. The building with the sloping reddish roof under the crane is the fish market.Old postcard, scali delle Barchette, LivornoThe first boat on the right in the old postcard is a “navicello”, along with some other smaller boats.

  1. This we like. The historic perspective through the power of photography.

Incidentally, navicello sounds almost like some kind of seaside drink. Not for the captain but for the passengers?

    - Waiter, I'll have two of those please!

  2. Very well done, VP! I think the postcard people should use your photo to do a new one and sell the old and new side by side.

    You could get rich!

  7. Really interesting - everything is the same, but the boats are nicer. They really like to keep things as they were in Italy - I guess they built to last. Lovely photo.

  11. Were you really trying to emulate? The result is stunning. I need to find a way of doing this. It's nice to see a navicello in the water.

  13. @ Per - The “navicello” drink could be a good idea, but it wouldn't ever be... on the rocks!
@ ciel & amatamari - In this case it is not difficult to find the place from where the original was shot, because it's along a bridge...

  15. Both photos are great. I love the old bridge with arches and the old boat shapes. I'm sure the new boats are more comfortable and practical, though! It's fun to compare.

  17. @ tapirgal - Then, these were mostly 'commercial' boats, now you see pleasure crafts only.

  20. I like these "then" & "now" exposes. A quick history lesson. A picture tells a thousand words.

  21. Lovely to see the old and new contrasted - so much the same and it seems most of the restoration has been done with consideration.
