Scali D'Azeglio

Palazzo dell'Aquila Nera, scali d'Azeglio, Fosso Reale, LivornoI hope I'm not abusing this “one hundred years apart” trick, but when I find a new old postcard I can't resist replicating it.Vintage postcard, Palazzo dell'Aquila Nera, scali d'Azeglio, Fosso Reale, LivornoHere is a view of the “Scali d'Azeglio” and the “Fosso Reale” (Royal Canal), it is clearly visible the “Palazzo dell'Aquila Nera”.

  3. Has anything changed in the meantime?! The two photos look almost identical, it's amazing!

P.S. How about showing us 7 blue items from your kitchen next? :-)

  4. Simply amazing. You could step out of the way-back machine and think you'd gone nowhere.

  5. Not abuse at all; but re-use. These two photos are wonderful! It's just amazing at how little things have changed over 100 years.

Well, hell, I'm almost that old and I haven't changed at all!

Well, that may be a bit of an exaggeration.

    Just a tad.

  6. I recently spent 45 minutes in a museum bookstore looking at Philadelphia then and now pictures. I love this!

  7. I guess there are more boats today than 100 years ago! More colorful now and more grey back then! I prefer the here and now rather than the there and then!

  8. Wow! Double Wow! You nailed this one to the millimeter - how did you find the spot? I wonder how did they got rid of the boats at the time - there must have been boats at the time. It is easy in the digital era, but I used to have a home lab to make photos - it was very hard to edit those.

  10. Not so much of a change except for the number of boats! Cool comparision!

  11. Can't get enough of them. It does look like not much has changed!

  12. It hasn't changed much! Beautiful place by the way:)

  13. It might be comforting to see not much has changed over the past 100 years.
But I find it slightly worrying, in a way.

  14. I like these postcard series. It's surprising how little things in your city have changed over the years.

  15. Nothing has changed except for the fact someone seemed to be swimming in the canal way back then. Today you would get run over by a boat or swallow a lot of diesel fuel.

A testament as well to the workmanship of years gone by.

  16. This is actually really cool to see, especially when so little has changed. Amazing.

  17. I'm very impressed! It's amazing that you found a scene that has changed so little over time...and then you captured the exact same angle. Well done!

  18. It is great that the beautiful scenery has not changed.

  19. Really amazing. Love the photos. I would agree with Roberto it is kind of weird that nothing has changed much.

  20. Wonderful. One of the great things about Italy is the continuity from past to present which creates an extraordinary sense of national self-identity. BTW I read yesterday that a sequel to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was released yesterday here in the States.

  21. @ Ellie - No boats here at the time, it wasn't a commercial area.
@ Roberto S - You probably know that you're right to be worried, as I am.
@ Ilse - Great, a new hope for Vogon poetry to bore the Universe! Thanks for the tip, I've already checked everything online!

  22. No, no! Keep up the comparisons! In this case I like the modern scene with the boats. In your last one I liked the older scene. I'm enjoying this.

  23. I like this kind of "game". Both pictures are fabulous.

  24. @Ilse - Too bad that in Italy too often "continuity with the past" means "struggle to keep the pace".
@VP - A quick bite here, if you can't wait. And yes, I know what you mean, but this blog of yours may help people to thing again about all the beauty we're leaving behind.

  25. It looks exactly the same! How amazing! Keep them coming, VP.

  26. Very nicely done. Other than boat traffic, not much has changed in 100 years.

  27. You collect old postcards?

No, you are definitely not abusing it. I really enjoy these posts! And again, I'm amazed that very little has changed! Remove the cars and the boats, and I only see two minor differences: the curved arch of the doorways and that structure sticking out over the water.

  28. Looks fabulous without boats, but on the other hand I like business of the modern world.

  29. I love those before and after shots. If you did yours in B&W, nobody would know the difference, because nothing has changed, not even the curtains in the windows. Well, the boats.

  30. Vogon - Great idea. Almost like before and after. Keep up the great work. Your post are always interesting. the best Daily Photo site I have seen.
