Postal Faces

If any of you has any idea about the possible connection of these three strange faces and our Central Post Office in “Via Cairoli”, please let me know. The three faces are repeated regularly around the building, built in the late 20s of the last century and restored recently.Decorative faces, Central Postal Office, via Cairoli, LivornoDecorative faces, Central Postal Office, via Cairoli, LivornoDecorative faces, Central Postal Office, via Cairoli, Livorno“Via Cairoli” is a quite solemn street bisecting the Pentagon from the apse of the “Duomo” to “Piazza Cavour”. It is mostly banks.

  2. I'm not sure, but I'd swear the first one is my uncle! The reason is he kept sticking his tongue out and finally bit it off. Ever thereafter he was known as Uncle Tongueless.

All three were probably poets of some sort or another... ;-)

Hope you have a great weekend!

  3. These faces are so animated compared to many of the Baroque or pseudo Baroque masks you see. I'm guessing it has nothing to do with the postal system, but was someone's (good) idea for decoration. I love these faces. They have a lot of variety as well as expression and detail.

  4. Someone decided that the solemn street and the Banks needed some life in the vicinity.

  5. I've occasionally seen faces like these on buildings here. I'm curious about why they decorate buildings too!

  7. I really do not understand the propensity of Europeans to decorate their buildings with faces. I find them quite freaky. Fabulously done, but still…

  9. No idea actually, but really like them - especially the middle one with this playful half- smile.

  11. I'm guessing each one has something to do with digestion. Digestion of what, is the question.

  14. I can't stop laughing. This second one is like nothing I've seen before. Somebody carved his sense of humor right there. It is very refreshing. I couldn't believe my eyes.
