Red Brick Church

San Francesco, Saint Francis church, Old Fortress, Fortezza VecchiaOn the main level of the “Fortezza Vecchia” an old brick church had been practically rebuilt after the damages of the last war. The tiny building sits just on top of the huge fortress, more than ten meters above the sea level, built of the same red brickwork of the old bastions. The original church dated around the second half of 15th century and was dedicated to San Francesco (Saint Francis).

    Very interesting post. The rebuilding have taken it's time though but hopefully it will be worth the wait:-)

    A wise decision to rebuild the church. It reminds me of a Catholic church back in a remote western Papua years ago. It was the tallest building, I guessed, and the most artistic one.

    Christopher is right to be perplexed by the length of the process. The inside of the fortress collapsed completely under the 1943 bombings. Some works began in the 70's going on and off for years. The little church has no particular artistic or religious value, it is only part of the fortress as it was. And I like it, in its simplicity.

    This is going to sound a bit weird I guess, but the simplicity and shape of the façade reminds me of just slightly of Santa Maria in Aracoeli which, along with Santa Maria in Trastevere, is one of my favourites in younr part of the world. This is a very nice little one deserving to be at last restored.
